Abstract

The clinical practice site is a rural health clinic that has experienced 28% staffing turnover in the last year, and opportunities for improvement in communication and teamwork were identified. The principal investigator (PI) used the Iowa Model Revised (IMR) as a theoretical framework and Lippitt’s change theory to promote change for the identified priority issue. TeamSTEPPS is an evidence-based program designed to improve communication and teamwork in healthcare teams with the goal of improving patient outcomes and safety. The quality improvement project utilized a quasi-experimental design with pre- and post-intervention surveys to answer the question: among staff at a rural health family medicine clinic, what impact can an evidence-based teambuilding program have on perception of teamwork, support, and communication? Designed for use with TeamSTEPPS, the Teamwork Attitude Questionnaire (T-TAQ) and the Teamwork Perception Questionnaire (T-TPQ) were used. The Iowa Implementation for Sustainability Framework was created for use with the IMR and served as the framework for implementation. The team completed a half-day training with modules covering communication, team leadership, situation monitoring, and mutual support. In an independent t-test, T-TAQ survey post-intervention scores, M = 4.47, SD = 0.38, were higher than pre-intervention scores, M = 4.3, SD = 0.33. Post-intervention scores for T-TPQ, M = 3.97, SD = 0.65, were higher than pre-intervention scores, M = 3.64, SD = 0.59. Both showed positive trends in all dimensions and an overall percentage increase in mean scores of 8.9%. QIP results support the clinical significance and an improvement in the perception of teamwork, communication, and support.
