Abstract

Long-term stress can lead to healthcare provider burnout. Mindfulness-based interventions, even when shortened, may provide a promising and innovative method to reduce stress and prevent burnout. Research on mindfulness programs has demonstrated significant benefits for both providers and patients. This quality improvement project aims to evaluate the effect of a brief mindfulness-based stress reduction program (MBSR) for providers who evaluate veterans on the variable of mindfulness awareness compared to current site practice. Lewin’s change management model and Peplau’s Interpersonal Relations Theory were used. Plan-Do-Study-Act was the implementation framework applied. The design was pretest-posttest using the Mindful Attention Awareness Scale (MAAS). The intervention, comprised of five weeks of mindfulness training, took place at a Mississippi clinic. Each session was 150 minutes in length. Comparison of pre- and post-test MAAS scores demonstrated project impact. Results showed every participant (n=4) increased MAAS scores at post-test. The observed mean difference between pre- and post-test scores is 0.155, with a standard deviation of 0.0415. A two-tailed paired t-test revealed a p-value of 0.0075. The Pearson correlation was r = 0.995. Limitations include lack of control group, limited timeframe, and measurement of a single outcome measure. This project advances knowledge at the project site by equipping providers with skills to improve mindfulness. Results showed statistically significant improvement in mindfulness awareness. This contributes to the growing body of evidence demonstrating how mindfulness benefits providers and may inform organizational practices and policies. In conclusion, a brief MBSR intervention is feasible, acceptable, and beneficial for providers who evaluate veterans.
