Abstract

Healthcare providers performing foot examinations are a crucial component in assisting Type II diabetic patients to maintain their health. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to determine how the providers' implementation of Inlow’s 60-second Diabetic Foot screen, compared to current practice standards, impacts the number of foot exams among Type II diabetic patients at a primary care clinic over 12 weeks. Therefore, it was unknown if or to what degree the provider implementing Inlow’s 60-second Diabetic Foot Screen impacts the number of foot exams conducted compared to the current practice among Type II diabetic patients. Wiedenbach’s Helping Art of Clinical Nursing theory and Lewin’s change model provided the theoretical underpinnings for this quality improvement project. The implementation framework used for this project was the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research. A quasi-experimental pre-post design was employed over a 12-week period. The sample consisted of 80 patients (n = 33 in the comparative group and n = 47 in the implementation group). Data was collected using Inlow’s 60-Second Foot Screen form. A Pearson chi-square test was conducted, and results showed an increase in foot exam completions from the comparative group (n = 18, 54.5%) to the implementation group (n = 33, 70.2%); however, the findings were not statistically significant, χ² (1, N = 80) = 2.06, p = .165. The clinical significance was demonstrated by a 15.7% increase in the number of providers conducting foot examinations. The project advanced knowledge and the nursing discipline by increasing the clinic’s capacity, providing refresher training for staff, and embedding the foot screening tool into the electronic medical record for a more streamlined documentation process.
