Abstract
This study compared the pragmatic skills possessed by second born children to those of children without siblings. Participants for this investigation were 56 fourth-grade children. Participants were identified through questionnaires distributed through area public schools. Based on the information obtained from the parent completed questionnaires, participants were assigned to one of two groups, depending on the presence of siblings. The classroom teachers of each participant then completed a Pragmatic Language Skills Inventory (PLSI), an instrument used to rate pragmatic skills exhibited by children, as they compared to other children of the same age and gender. The data obtained from the inventory were then analyzed to determine if a significant difference existed among the three subtests of the PLSI for the two groups of participants. Additional analyses were performed to determine if there were significant differences among student group performance on the subtests and between groups. Findings and implications of this investigation are discussed.
