Abstract

The evolution of social networking sites and their integration with many modern-life aspects has urged religious people and parties as well to develop ways and tools to reach and communicate with others. Precisely, people who follow the religion of Islam have also used social networking sites to communicate religiously and to promote their religion and culture. This research has surveyed people who practice Islam to determine their usage of social networking sites to express their religious beliefs. This study attempts to answer three research questions and examine a hypothesis. Findings suggest that Muslims obtain religious communication on social media frequently in an average of four hours daily or more. They seek religious knowledge, connection with likeminded people, free expression of opinions and beliefs, and belonging to the Islamic world. Demographic features of Muslims affect their uses and gratification of social media. The more religious people are in real life, the more religious they will be on social media communication.
