Abstract

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) knows no boundaries. It is not obstructed by geographic location. It is not more or less frequent according to socio-economic status. ASD also is not impeded by parent or caregiver educational levels; it strikes all cultural divisions with the same ferocity. Parents or caregivers of children with ASD are their first and most fervent advocates. How they perceive schools, identification, placement, and programming have a prodigious effect on the educational outcome for students with ASD. This study will investigate the influences of geographic location (GL), socio-economic status (SES), and level of education (LOE) of the parents or caregivers in relationship to their perceptions of identification, educational placement within public schools and perceived teacher quality and training. This topic is important for two reasons. The first reason is that parent or caregiver participation within Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEIA) is the forefront of this Federally funded program. The second is that parents or caregivers are the most knowledgeable of the child with ASD’s needs and can be of immense assistance in helping to plan for the best eventual outcome for the student. The findings of this study can be used to improve communication between parents or caregivers and stakeholders in the IDEIA process. Improving parent or caregiver perceptions will assist in helping create a more positive learning environment, increase parent or caregiver involvement, and lessen conflict between the schools and parents or caregivers. Working with parents or caregivers helps to cut down on litigation and provides the best educational outcome for students with ASD.
