Abstract
Since its start in 2011 as a civil uprising and as a part of the wider wave of protests movements of the Arab spring, Syria has been witnessing a civil war with an escalating tone that took the country into a dark tunnel that doesn’t seem to have an end. This study aimed to explore the perceptions of Syrians refugees about the health services they now receive in Egypt as a hosting country. To achieve this, quantitative survey and in-depth interviews were conducted among 141 adult Syrian refugees residing in Cairo and Alexandria, Egypt throughout a one-month-long period in summer 2017. The study was conducted within the theoretical framework of the health belief model. Data collected through interviews/surveys were analyzed and interpreted through the SPSS program and employed a thematic analysis approach. Despite some concerns Syrian refugees have on the healthcare services in Egypt, the study found that a majority of the participants were satisfied with the healthcare services they are currently receiving in Egypt and results supported Syrian refugees have no issues with any sort of discrimination against them from Egyptians. The results identified the referral system that UNHCR has designed for them as the main barrier they perceive in their experience visiting with the public health care system in Egypt.
