Abstract
Many research studies have focused on voice disorders in occupational voice users (i.e., teachers, singers, coaches). However, there is limited research on voice disorders in cheerleaders. Therefore, this study investigated the presence of dysphonia in division I collegiate sideline cheerleaders before and after the 2023 football season. Participants included twenty-six collegiate sideline cheerleaders at a division I university. Participants completed a demographic survey and the Voice Handicap Index (VHI). In addition, their modal, high, and low pitch frequencies were measured, and voices were assessed using the Consensual Auditory-Perceptual Evaluation of Voice. This study found significant results regarding the alteration subjective voice characteristics. Results regarding objective voice characteristics before and after football season were clinically significant. This implies that education should be provided to athletes, coaches, and parents to aid in the preservation of cheerleaders' voices during their frequent, high-intensity vocal use.
