Abstract

The opioid epidemic in the United States has been a continuous public health crisis, as opioid-associated overdose has become one of the leading causes of death. The risk of opioid misuse increases following exposure to opioids perioperatively. As a result, anesthesia providers are facing a significant shift in practice to decrease opioid administration while adequately managing perioperative pain. While opioids have historically been the mainstream for perioperative pain management, multimodal analgesic (MMA) regimens as part of Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) programs are being utilized as alternative methods. With these programs, opioids are reduced by administering non-opioids with neuraxial and regional techniques as adjuncts. This project focuses on creating and proposing an MMA protocol to the anesthesia department for review, support, and implementation. A retrospective review of the types and volume of gynecological surgeries will illustrate a need to introduce this protocol to improve overall outcomes in non-pregnant females undergoing elective gynecological surgery. This will result in decreased opioid exposure to these patients, subsequently lowering the risk of postoperative complications, length of stay, opioid dependence, and a financial insult to healthcare.
