Abstract

International students are a fast-growing part of the student body in U.S. high education institutions. Several studies have been conducted that focus on international students' media use for acculturation. The purpose of this thesis was to explore the influence of cultural variance on mass media function in international students' acculturation. Cultivation theory and uses and gratifications theory were used as the framework to examine the international students' media behaviors in their acculturation process, as well as the possible influence of cultural variance in such behavior. A survey instrument was used in order to collect data with regard to media use, media motives, acculturation and cultural characteristics. The results indicated positive relationship between specific media uses and acculturation. In addition no relationship between internationals' cultural variations and their media use in the acculturation process was not found.
