Abstract

These works explore the contradictions in the American character, highlighting the many ironies and hypocrisies inherent within them. I hope to encourage the viewer to reassess his or her own perspectives by confronting them with bold imagery that questions the relative civic and cultural values of American society. The mediums of printmaking and video are utilized for their fundamental accessibility to the audience, and for their unique compatibility with the democratic ideal. The wealth of American cultural iconography is used as a social language, allowing me to communicate complex ideas very simply. The visual styles of vintage commercial advertising and military propaganda are used to evoke their historical associations with the theme of each work.
