Abstract
A Content Analysis of How Al Jazeera English and Arabic Channels Framed the War on Gaza The purpose of this study was to examine how Al Jazeera channels; Al Jazeera English channel and Al Jazeera Arabic Channel framed the war on Gaza from December 27, 2008 to January 18, 2009. A total of 220 news stories were analyzed, with 110 stories from each channel. The study showed that the two channels follow the same trends in covering the Palestinian Israeli conflict, often focusing on the Human disaster script and turning a political conflict into a humanitarian crisis that requires support and immediate human intervention. The two channels differed significantly in the visual framing of the war. Al Jazeera Arabic did not shy away from showing graphic images. In contrast Al Jazeera English presented human suffering without showing graphic images. The two channels succeeded in giving voice to the Palestinians, which western channels often failed to do. Although the two channels gave a platform for Israeli officials and military representatives as often as Palestinian government officials and military representatives, they still showed a slant toward Palestinians by largely focusing on Gaza citizens while Israeli citizens were absent from the coverage.
