Abstract
A non-isothermal method using TG/DTA instrument have been used to find the thermal decomposition and dehydration studies of Cobalt Chloride and Cobalt Bromide with electropositive metals like Cd, Fe, Cr, Zn and Mn under argon gas flow. The TG/DTA plots reveal that there is loss of approximately six moles of water from CoCl2.6H2 O and TG/DTA plot of CoBr2 did not show any peaks and we are uncertain on thermal decomposition of CoBr2. The change in enthalpy (ΔH) of Cobalt Chloride with metals Cd and Mn was calculated by using standard conditions because JANAF tables did not have the heat capacity values and Fe was calculated using Kirchoff's equation. The ΔH values obtained were negative supporting the TG/DTA plots. The change in enthalpy (ΔH) of Cobalt Bromide with metals Zn and Mn was calculated using standard conditions and the obtained ΔH values were negative indicating an exothermic reaction supporting the TG/DTA plot. The variations in thermal behavior of CoCl2.6H2 O and CoBr2 were not comprehensive when reacted with electropositive metals like Cd, Fe, Cr, Zn and Mn. The entire study may act as a base for conducting future studies of CoCl2.6H2 O and CoBr2 in various industries.
