Abstract
An increasing number of states allow high school curricular credits earned in marching band to substitute for required physical education credits. Legitimizing this substitution would required that marching band meet contemporary recommendations for frequency, duration, and intensity of physical activity as stated in the Third National Standard for Physical Education. The purpose of this exploratory descriptive study was to determine the intensity of physical activity occurring in a marching band rehearsal by measuring the heart rates of collegiate marching band members using pulse counts and heart rate monitors. Some marching band activities were found to raise the average heart rate of participants beyond the threshold for moderately intense physical activity, but never to a vigorously intense level. A significant difference (p < .001) was found between the average heart rate of participants while standing and playing versus marching and playing.
