Abstract

This thesis was written in short episodic stories and poems, housing many characters, but featuring only one main character. The stories take the main character across the world to Lebanon, Germany, Afghanistan, Memphis, Florida, Great Lakes and others as she struggles with being a female in the United States Navy, during the eighties and nineties. Her struggles include; growing up, her fear of being perceived as weak or helpless, leaving home for the first time, remaining feminine in a masculine environment, and the physical changes which result from hard training and military rules. The main character is challenged by men at every turn; first her father at home, then the men she will meet during her naval career, including one particular president who frustrated her beyond reason. Her decisions in each locale change her perception of the world around her, as she herself is forever changed.
