Abstract

This study was designed to examine how social media changed the culture of expression in Saudi Arabia. This study surveyed 400 Saudis who use social media in order to explore potential correlations between degree of expression, political activeness, amount of social media use, perceived opinion climate, government censorship and purposes for using social media. A survey questionnaire was used to answer proposed hypotheses and research questions. The results found strong correlations between different variances, namely the amount of social media use, degree of expression freedom, and level of political activeness. Also a strong significant impact was found on the way that people perceived the opinion climate via social media. Moreover, entertainment was the main purpose for Saudis to use social media that influenced their expression freedom, political activeness, perceived opinion climate.
