Abstract
In recent years, the Internet has become the prime source of information and news, which threatens the future of print newspapers worldwide. The distribution of print newspapers has been affected by the availability of online news, websites, and social media, which in turn affected the sales of print newspapers. This paper explored the impact of the Internet and social media on the future of Saudi print newspapers. This study investigated Saudi people about the future of Saudi print newspapers. A survey containing 18 Likert statements and demographic information was conducted and distributed online. 857 subjects responded. The 18 Likert statements were classified under 3 categories, namely, the future of print newspapers, the effect of the Internet and the value of print newspapers. The results of this study indicated that print newspapers in Saudi Arabia are struggling due to the spread of people using Internet and social media. Only 13.6% of respondents agreed that they buy print newspapers regularly, and 72% disagreed that they prefer to read print newspapers more than online. Furthermore, 80.4% of the respondents agreed that the evolution of the Internet will end the era of print newspapers and 95.6% agreed that social media had become part of their lives. The results indicated that there is a negative impact of Internet and social media on the sales and distribution of print newspapers in Saudi Arabia. Demographic findings were also presented through this study.
