Abstract

The pending retirements of community college leaders across the United States has been projected in the literature by numerous researchers. In 2008, Arkansas began to offer the Leadership Institute (LI) to develop future leaders for the community colleges in the state. This grow-your-own leader program was developed with input from current community college leaders as well as the Competencies for Community College Leaders, published by The American Association of Community Colleges (AACC). This study investigated the effectiveness of the LI on the perceived development of the AACC Competencies for Community College Leaders, (2013). The study also assessed the perceived impact of LI on the career/degree advancement of the participants as well as a comparison of competencies and career/degree advancement based on gender. The LI participants ranked their perceptions of preparedness and importance for the AACC Competencies for Community College Leaders, (2013) equal to or higher than those who did not attend LI. Participation in LI had a positive impact on advancement in careers and degree attainment with females seeking to advance their educational attainment at rates higher than males. The AACC Competencies for Community College Leaders, (2013) provide a framework for those interested in leading community colleges across the United States. Further research on the utilization of the competencies by doctoral programs with a community college emphasis could enhance the literature regarding preparation of future community college leaders. Grow-your-own leadership programs often provide a cost effective method for preparation of future leaders. The utilization of the AACC Competencies for Community College Leaders, (2013) in these programs could provide valuable information for the professional development of future community college leaders.
