Abstract

There were two purposes of this study. The first was to identify commonly practiced strategies for the recruitment of Hispanic undergraduate students utilized by two-year private and public Hispanic Serving Institutions. The second was to evaluate the previously identified recruiting strategies perceived by admission recruiters to be the most effective for the recruitment of Hispanic undergraduate students used by two-year Hispanic Serving Institutions. Fifty-eight Hispanic Serving Institutions completed an online survey questionnaire relating to the demographic questions, non-activity recruiting strategies, passive recruiting strategies, active recruiting strategies, and open-ended suggestions. Descriptive statistics and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) were applied to analyze the data collected. A strategy that was selected as moderately effective and very effective for the participating institutions was identified as a regularly practiced strategy. A strategy that received a sum of the effective scale scores of 50% or higher was chosen as the most effective recruiting strategy. The findings shown a list of commonly practiced recruiting strategies used by all 58 participating institutions. The research further reported that the most effective recruiting strategies by the 58 institutions were: offering affordable tuition; providing student services (orientation, housing, health insurance, immigration advising, and social programming); and sending recruiters to Hispanic fairs. The one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed no significant difference between the most effective recruiting strategies and the school types (public/private). Thus, these strategies did not vary in their effectiveness when it came to the recruitment of Hispanic undergraduate students.
