Abstract
College and universities struggle to maintain a balance between providing academically rigorous programs and facilitating high levels of student retention and timely graduation. Academic completion is a performance measure for universities and a large component of assessment is the percentage of students that perform successfully within their degree programs. Not only are these measures crucial to establishing and maintaining a university’s reputation and ranking, state funded institutions are evaluated against these measures to determine the financial support they will receive. This study examines the role that positive communication has with four variables crucial to academic rehabilitation: Self-Esteem, Perceived Support, Knowledge of Academic Expectations, and University Connectedness. The researcher administered an inventory to probationary undergraduate students at a 4-Year, traditional university. Results indicated that increased levels of reported positive communication were positively correlated to three of the four identified variables.
