Abstract
The purpose of this qualitative case study was to examine how smartphones impacted the behavioral, academic, and emotional intelligence of middle school students. This study applied the theoretical framework of self-regulation theory and social learning theory to determine how smartphones impacted students. This qualitative case study included one research question 1) What are the impacts of smartphones on middle school students, with the following sub-questions on academics, behavior, and social-emotional intelligence. To answer the research question, a parent and teacher questionnaire was developed and administered, along with a series of classroom observations conducted over two weeks. Additionally, for triangulation, member checks, and data source triangulation was conducted to ensure the data collected was accurate. Once the data was collected, it was coded for themes. For the research questions, the themes that emerged were academic impacts within the household, academic impacts within the classroom, behavioral impacts at home, behavioral impacts within the classroom, classroom observation behaviors, social-emotional impacts observed by parents, and social-emotional impacts observed by teachers. The results of this study emphasize the previous research conducted about the varying aspects of smartphones and their impacts on middle school students over the short term and long term.
