Abstract
Research investigating the media perception of African American has found a conflicting relationship between the variables of media exposure, self-esteem, and colorism. The present study sought to investigate the possible mediation effect of colorism on the relationship between exposure to Black media and self-esteem. Participants were presented with images that depicted Black people in current media and answered the four question that appeared beneath. Participants then completed a colorism and self-esteem questionnaires. It was predicted that the total relationship of exposure to Black media and self-esteem will be partially mediated by colorism. Higher levels of media exposure will be associated with higher ratings of colorism, which will be associated with low self-esteem.
