Abstract

In this study I focus on whether the media has any effect on victim-blaming in the universities setting. I looked particularly at Ivy league universities due to their prestige. I focus on how they handled the assault, the language used by the media for the perpetrator and the survivor. In this study the university that I studied were Duke University, Vanderbilt University, and Stanford University. I used a critical content to analysis to find emerging themes throughout national newspapers, The New York Times and USA Today. I also looked at the student newspaper for each university. My findings concluded that the media framed the stories in favor of the perpetrator giving them a certain credibility While, they framed their language to dehumanize the survivor.
