Abstract
The extreme mitigation measures of the COVID-19 pandemic had many negative impacts on children’s mental health and behavior. This study sought to examine the effects of COVID-19 mitigation strategies on kindergarten student misconduct post-COVID-19. For this study, kindergarten students’ office discipline referrals (ODRs) from one school district in the Bootheel region of southeast Missouri were compared to determine if differences existed among kindergarten student behaviors. Two groups were utilized in this study: Group A, consisting of pre-COVID-19 ODRs, and Group B, post-COVID-19 ODRs. This study found a statistically significant difference in the number of ODRs pre- and post-COVID-19. However, the number of ODRs decreased rather than increased. It is likely that the effects of PBIS and COVID-19 are highly commingled; therefore, this study could not determine if COVID-19 resulted in increased behavior problems among kindergarten students.
