Abstract
Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly integrated into nursing education; however, nursing faculty report inconsistent preparedness, including gaps in AI knowledge and self-efficacy for responsible AI integration. This quality improvement project addressed inconsistent faculty preparedness through an asynchronous AI educational program. The purpose was to address gaps in AI knowledge and self-efficacy, and the aim was to evaluate changes in AI self-efficacy and AI knowledge while supporting AI integration into nursing education. Rogers' Diffusion of Innovations Theory served as the change theory, the Technology Acceptance Model served as the theoretical framework, and the Plan-Do-Study-Act framework guided implementation. A quantitative one-group pretest-posttest design was implemented over five weeks with undergraduate nursing faculty at one baccalaureate school of nursing. Participants completed pre- and post-intervention assessments. AI self-efficacy was measured using the validated Generative Artificial Intelligence Competency Self-Efficacy Scale for Teachers and Researchers, and AI knowledge was measured using a 15-item assessment developed by the principal investigator. Five paired AI self-efficacy assessments and six paired knowledge assessments met inclusion criteria for analyses. AI self-efficacy significantly improved, t(4) = -11.16, p < .001, d = 4.70. AI knowledge scores increased from 91% to 94%; however, the change was not statistically significant, t(5) = -1.46, p = .20. A project limitation was the investigator-developed 15-item AI knowledge assessment. Overall, findings demonstrated increased AI self-efficacy and readiness to integrate AI into teaching. These results support incorporating AI education into faculty development to promote sustainable, evidence-based AI integration in nursing education and strengthen faculty preparedness for AI-enhanced teaching.
