Abstract
Virtual simulation is an evidence-based teaching strategy that enhances student learning; however, inconsistent faculty preparation limits its implementation in nursing education. A needs assessment identified a practice gap, with 70% of nursing faculty reporting no virtual simulation training within the previous 12 months. The purpose of this Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) quality improvement (QI) project was to evaluate the effectiveness of a structured non-immersive virtual simulation training program on nursing faculty confidence, perceived competence, and technology readiness in an Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) program. The aim was to improve faculty preparedness to implement non-immersive virtual simulation. A quantitative, quasi-experimental, one-group pretest-posttest design was conducted with a convenience sample of 10 faculty members. The project was guided by Benner's Novice-to-Expert Theory, Lewin's Change Theory, the Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) framework, and the International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning (INACSL) Healthcare Simulation Standards of Best Practice. Participants completed a four-week structured training program. Faculty confidence was measured using the Confidence Scale, technology readiness was measured using the Technology Readiness Index 2.0 and perceived competence was measured using the Novice-To- Expert Self -Assessment. Paired-samples t tests demonstrated significant improvements in perceived competence, t(9) = –6.75, p < .001, and confidence, t(9) = –2.64, p = .027; technology readiness improved but was not statistically significant, t(9) = –1.61, p = .142. Findings were limited by the small sample. Structured faculty training improved preparedness to implement non-immersive virtual simulation and supports standardized faculty training in nursing education.
