Abstract

Critical thinking is a necessary skill for a nurse to possess to be safe and competent. The problem identified for this Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project is the lack of utilization of high-fidelity simulation (HFS) at the University of Arkansas Community College at Morrilton (UACCM)—the DNP project aimed to implement HFS and reduce the critical thinking gap between RN students and practice. The DNP student evaluated student critical thinking with pre-and post-tests. The pre-and post-test results containing Next Generation (NGN) test items showed no statistical significance (p=0.25). The Nursing Anxiety and Self-Confidence with Clinical Decision Making© (NASC-CDM©) scale pre- and post-tests showed statistical significance for improved student self-confidence (p=3.61349E-09) and decreased anxiety (p=1.26624E-06). The results of the DNP project reflect the positive influence that HFS has on students' academic experience. Understanding HFS's impact on students' critical thinking ability allows the educators at UACCM to prepare RN students to be safe and competent practicing nurses.
