Abstract

Nursing faculty mentorship is an essential component of professional development, job satisfaction and faculty retention. However, many schools lack a structured approach to preparing their faculty members to act as mentors. This quality improvement project set out to determine whether the implementation of a formal mentoring toolkit would improve nursing faculty members perceived competency to act as mentors. Guided by Bandura’s Social Cognitive Theory (SCT), Lewin’s Change Theory, and the latest evidence-based research, this project sought to answer the following question: In full-time nursing faculty members teaching in a BSN program at a small, private college (P), how does the implementation of a mentoring toolkit (I), when compared to current mentoring practices (C), impact perceived mentoring competency (O) over a six-week period (T). A pre-/ post-test design was used with 10 eligible faculty participants. The main intervention for this project required participants to view the educational modules that were part of a formal mentoring toolkit. Mentoring competency was measured using the Mentoring Competency Assessment (MCA). Following the completion of the project, data was measured using the Wilcox-Signed Rank test which resulted in a z- value of -2.083 which indicates that the intervention had a positive significant impact. The findings of this project indicate that the use of a formal mentorship toolkit may improve a faculty member’s ability to act as a mentor which could in turn strengthen faculty development, and reduce role ambiguity, burnout and turnover. This project supports the use of a formal mentorship toolkit as a sustainable strategy to improve mentoring practices among nursing faculty members.
