Abstract

The quality improvement (QI) project aims to determine if clinical instructors perceive changes in self-efficacy in communication skills specific to lateral violence (LV) situations secondary to an educational intervention. Currently, clinical nurse instructors lack education specifically addressing communication strategies to utilize when LV occurs in the clinical setting. Banduras Social Cognitive Theory, Lewin’s Change Theory and the Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) were employed as frameworks in the development of this project. Methods used in this quasi-experimental design project include administration of the Self Efficacy to Address Disruptive Behaviors Scale (SADBS) survey to project participants, nursing clinical instructors. The evidence-based practice (EBP) intervention included a presentation of an educational intervention on LV communication skills based on Dr. Martha Griffin’s work on Cognitive Rehearsal Therapy (CRT). The SADBS was re-administered four to six weeks after the education was delivered. Results of this QI project indicated statistically significant findings with a 17.7% increase in instructor’s confidence to address disruptive behaviors. Limitations of the project include a small, non-diverse sample population. LV is frequently seen in hospital settings, beginning as early as nursing school, and contributes to discontent and attrition within the profession. As student role models, clinical instructors have an obligation to students to be competent communicators and strong student advocates. This QI project supports the use of an educational intervention to impact clinical instructors’ self-efficacy in managing lateral violence situations encountered during clinical rotations.
