Abstract

Many nursing colleges rely on adjunct faculty to deliver the clinical curriculum (i.e., skills lab, clinical instruction, simulation, etc). Without a structured approach to orienting novice adjunct clinical nursing faculty to their roles and responsibilities, educational outcomes may be negatively impacted. Nursing literature documents the impact of a structured orientation program on novice self-efficacy. The purpose of this quality improvement project is to evaluate the impact of an orientation program on novice nursing adjunct clinical faculty self-efficacy with the Academic Clinical Nurse Educator (ACNE) core competencies. Self-efficacy was assessed using the Academic Clinical Nurse Educator Skills Acquisition Tool (ACNESAT). The quality improvement project used Benner’s Novice to Expert Theory as a theoretical framework for how role efficacy is acquired. Lewin’s Change Model served as the change framework used to implement the orientation program. Project participants were novice clinical nursing adjuncts who completed the ACNESAT before and after completing the orientation program which included a 4-hour in-person meeting, asynchronous online content, and mentorship. The implementation framework used was “plan, do, study, act”. A Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test was performed to observe the difference in pre- and post-survey ACNESAT scores. The findings of a 2-sided test showed no significant difference (p = .593, z = .535). These results could be due to the project’s limitation which was a small sample size (n = 3). Regardless, the project successfully implemented a structured, evidence-based orientation program at the project site which is a significant contribution.
