Abstract

According to the literature, social injustices, inequities, and implicit bias influence health outcomes in marginalized populations. To eliminate health disparities, nurses should be prepared to provide care that addresses these issues, and faculty should be able to effectively integrate diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) principles into the nursing curriculum. A literature review suggests the integration of DEI into nursing education is lacking, and by offering an educational session for faculty on best practices for curriculum incorporation, this project aimed to address that gap. The Reach, Effectiveness, Adoption, Implementation, Maintenance (RE-AIM) model guided this project. RE-AIM emphasizes targeting a population to adopt and implement practices that benefit the larger community. Lippitt’s Seven-Step Change Theory was used to conduct a needs assessment, evaluate faculty motivation, assess available resources, develop a plan, define roles, execute the project, and consider sustainability. A pre- and post-survey design evaluated participants’ knowledge, skills, and attitudes before and after the intervention. Data analysis involved a two-tailed paired-sample t-test comparing baseline means with post-intervention means. Results indicated a slight increase in mean scores from 5.20 (SD = 0.44) to 5.57 (SD = 0.45). While not statistically significant (t(2) = -1.12, p = .380), with an effect size of Cohen’s d = 0.64, the intervention reflects a moderate practical impact on enhancing faculty confidence and knowledge. This project supports broader efforts to integrate DEI principles into nursing education at the project site, thereby influencing nursing practice and promoting social change.
