Abstract
Neuromuscular blockade agents are a medication class that requires education and knowledge to ensure protocols, assessments, and tools are utilized in acute care facilities. Quality improvement (QI) project focused on the use of neuromuscular blockage agents to ensure nursing staff, who have direct patient contact, received proper education. A quasi-experimental, pre-post project intervention design was used to evaluate evidence-based practice interventions with a literature review, assessment, and tools used by the population studied. Aim and purpose of the QI project was to increase nursing staff educational knowledge on the use of neuromuscular blockade agents in patients who are sedated requiring invasive mechanical ventilation over a four-week period. The theoretical framework with the Donabedian Model of Care was used to support structure, process, and outcome of the project. The ADKAR model was used to support the change framework needed for nursing education. The project outcome was evaluated using the implementation framework with pre-survey and post-survey, and the data collection method instrument was created and known as the data collection tool; all were completed by nursing staff who participated in the study. Statistically significant results for the study were seen using a two-tailed paired sample t-test (p = 0.003), and a Shapiro-Wilk test showing normal distribution along the bell curve. Limitations were noted with no control group and online education. After education was completed, the nursing discipline showed improvements in nursing education and improvements at the project site. Advancement for nursing education is planned to continue after the conclusion of the project by the implementation of the data tool for future nursing education.
