Abstract

The pursuit of ongoing professional development and learning is crucial to ensure nurses remain well-informed about healthcare trends and have access to the most up-to-date evidence-based materials. This quality improvement project aimed to implement a monthly educational series for nursing personnel within the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) through expansion of the Veterans Administration (VA) – Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes (ECHO) program. Using Bandura’s Self-Efficacy Theory of Motivation in Psychology, participants’ previous knowledge was linked to continued professional development. The plan, do, study, act (PDSA) framework provided structure for the project, with the awareness, desire, knowledge, ability, and reinforcement (ADKAR) framework serving as a roadmap for effective implementation of the change. Using an electronic, anonymous 12-item questionnaire, the participants’ pre-session knowledge was compared to their post-session knowledge. A Shapiro-Wilk test was used to determine normality (p < 0.05), with results showing deviation (p < .001). To compare the samples, a one-group post-test quasi-experimental design was used, employing a two-tailed Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Results suggested that the difference in knowledge was likely not due to random variation, with the post-test score (Mdn = 3.00) being higher than the pre-test score (Mdn = 2.00). Additionally, a Chi-Square Goodness of Fit test (p < 0.05) was completed for the July and August sessions, with the results returning as significant (p < 0.001). Out of a combined 162 respondents, 106 (65%) responded that they “definitely” would use the information acquired in their practice.
