Abstract

There is a massive threat to healthcare systems posed by the growing burnout of inexperienced RNs working in practice transition to new graduate preceptors. Currently, this "Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project" examines the role of the nurse in burnout within Long Term Acute Care (LTAC) facilities through the preceptorship. In the project, burnout factors and their effects on patient care and nursing workforce retention will be investigated, and interventions for burnout and its effects will develop. A mixed methods project involving qualitative and survey and interview analyses of five-year and older patients was performed. Burnout and job satisfaction were measured using the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) and the Nursing Job Satisfaction Survey (NJSS). High burnout and low job satisfaction in preceptors have been determined, with the increased workload, lack of institutional level of care, and emotional exhaustion contributing to high burnout and impacting nursing workforce retention and patient care in LTAC settings. Implementing a quick tip sheet for new graduate nurses in the electronic medical record (EMR), documentation positively minimized preceptor workload and enhanced documentation efficiency. Targeted interventions, such as guided mentorship, increased institutional level of care, and policy reform, will mitigate burnout. Mitigation of burnout in preceptors will stabilize the workforce and promote positive patient care and a positive work environment in LTAC settings. Long-term studies in sustained positive practice change in nurse preceptor roles must be continued in future studies.
