Abstract
Peer mentoring is an evidence-based strategy to improve student retention. However, for this approach to be sustainable, the students providing mentoring must be intentionally prepared for this role. This project introduces an evidence-based policy for training Bachelor of Science (BSN) students as peer mentors to enhance student outcomes and retention of first-year students. This policy was created for a small BSN program at a work-study college with a financially disadvantaged student body, which places the students at increased risk of not persisting in their degree. The training policy is intended to be implemented with nursing lab staff who are students in the program and function as informal mentors. The training prepares the student workers with clear expectations for the program, full faculty support, emotional intelligence, and cultural sensitivity. The effectiveness of the policy will be assessed using numerical data and analyzed for statistical significance.
