Abstract
The quality improvement project aimed to enhance compliance with the project site’s policy on participation in shared governance by providing an educational session on the importance of shared governance to faculty roles. Literature reviews revealed that shared governance increases faculty voice and satisfaction with their roles. By educating faculty about the role of shared governance and how to engage in institutional shared governance policies, both the institution and the faculty can benefit from more effective participation, leading to the continuous improvement of the program and incorporation of evidence-based practices into the curriculum. Using a quasi-experimental pre-post design, the principal investigator (PI) had faculty complete pre- and post-questionnaires that measured their desire to participate, their understanding of shared governance principles and potential benefits, and their confidence in their ability to engage in existing committee meetings. Analysis of these surveys was conducted using two-tailed t-tests and two-tailed Wilcoxon signed-rank tests (n=24). Statistically significant results indicated improvements in understanding and a greater desire to participate following the educational session. These results suggest that an educational session on shared governance and meeting facilitation was an effective strategy for increasing faculty understanding of shared governance. Continued education, research, and institutional support are needed to sustain a practice change.
