Abstract

Advanced Practice Provider (APP) leaders face unique stressors due to their dual roles as clinicians and administrators, which places them at an elevated risk for burnout. This Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) quality improvement project aimed to evaluate the impact of self-paced cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) programs, specifically Learn to Live and Lyra, on burnout among APP leaders at a medical center affiliated with a university and a children's hospital. Theproject spanned over six weeks, during which participants completed the Mini-Z Worklife Questionnaire for Leaders, assessing the effectiveness of the CBT programs. Although the original statistical analysis plan included a paired t-test, violations of normality led to the decision to use the Mann-Whitney U test. The findings indicated no statistically significant changes in burnout scores (p > .05); however, scores remained stable across all burnout subscales before and after the implementation of CBT. This suggests that CBT may provide a protective effect, helping to maintain baseline well-being during periods of high stress. The project's strengths included a survey completion rate of 66%, the use of a validated tool, and alignment with existing wellness initiatives. Limitations included a short implementation timeframe, seasonal workload variations, and limited tracking of engagement. Despite these challenges, the project demonstrates the feasibility of integrating CBT into leadership wellness strategies. Future initiatives should consider blended interventions, expanded tracking mechanisms, and longer intervention durations to better support mental health and resilience in advanced practice nursing leadership.
