Abstract

This project evaluated employee satisfaction with inclusivity efforts in a community health department setting prior to and after revisions to hiring and promotion policies. Interventions promoting and fostering inclusion efforts amongst employees in the healthcare setting have been linked to the best practice standards of increased patient satisfaction and improvements in outcomes. The purpose was to determine if policy revisions resulted in feelings of belonging to improve organizational culture towards inclusion, which has been demonstrated as a widespread problem in many workplace settings. Using Leininger’s Cultural Care Diversity and Universality Theory as a guiding framework and the FOCUS-PDSA model to assist in project design, pre and post intervention quantitative descriptive surveys gathered data on current employee satisfaction with perceptions of inclusion in a seven week timeframe. To assess reliability of surveys, a Cronbach alpha coefficient was determined as acceptable in assessing employee satisfaction in the 18 project participants. The findings indicated that satisfaction with inclusion post policy revisions was statistically significant based on an alpha value of 0.05, indicating that employees perceptions of inclusion improved post intervention, which were further enhanced by the large effect size. These results are important for the nursing profession as they demonstrate the value of inclusion practices in improving the healthcare environment for all. These project findings can be used as a guide to make similar policy changes that enhance the quality of lives for healthcare employees and the patients cared for by fostering inclusion, equity, and diversity practices.
