Abstract

Ineffective nurse leadership has been attributed to low nurse satisfaction, a decrease in morale, and can increase nurse turnover rates. Patient care and safety can be affected when nurses are dissatisfied with their workplace. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to increase nurses’ satisfaction rates on three behavioral health units by providing leadership classes for nursing leaders to attend to help combat nurse dissatisfaction rates. The methods utilized a quantitative design with pre- and post-intervention measurements. Pre- and post-intervention Likert-scale questionnaire data collected from direct-patient care registered nurses who met inclusion criteria on three behavioral health units by the principal investigator (PI). A paired t-test was used to determine whether there was a statistically significant difference in nursing satisfaction, as measured by the overall score of nurse workplace satisfaction, between pre-and post-intervention questionnaires. The major findings were the factor loadings for the questionnaire items ranged from 0.426 to 0.733, and hence all items were retained. The results of factor analysis showed that the items of nursing satisfaction produced one factor, namely, the overall increase in nursing satisfaction. The paired t-test showed a significant increase in nurse satisfaction rates between pre- and post- intervention questionnaires (t= -16.086, df=23, p< 0.001). The significance of this project showed that when the nurse leaders demonstrated the skills that they learned in their leadership classes, it had a positive impact by increasing nurse satisfaction rates.
