Abstract

Standardized testing serves as a measure of academic progress and readiness for licensure in nursing programs. Gaps in standardized testing performance emphasize the need for educational support. The problem identified for this Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) policy project is the lack of a formal standardized testing remediation policy within a community college nursing program in rural West Tennessee. The DNP project proposes the development and implementation of a standardized testing remediation policy to identify at-risk students early, provide individualized remediation plans, and improve program retention and licensure pass rates. The DNP project employed a quantitative design to assess the impact of standardized testing remediation during a second-year medical-surgical course. The DNP student evaluated pre- and post-remediation standardized test scores of thirty-four students. The pre- and post-remediation test results showed no statistically significant difference (t(12) = -2.04, p = 0.064). The results of the DNP project suggest that there is insufficient evidence to determine the impact of remediation on standardized test scores; however, a modest increase in the mean of the post-remediation standardized test was noted (67.17 > 63.32). The findings of the DNP project assist educators in understanding the role of remediation in the nursing curriculum at community colleges to collaborate effectively with students and implement a remediation plan, when necessary, thereby preparing them for academic progression and licensure. This DNP project implemented evidence-based remediation strategies to enhance the preparedness of nursing graduates for licensure and clinical practice to promote competency and patient safety.
