Abstract
This quality improvement (QI) project is of utmost importance as it aims to significantly enhance the debriefing process after simulations in an Associate Registered Nursing Program. The project is designed to equip nursing instructors with a comprehensive guide to facilitate debriefing after simulations, thereby improving student learning outcomes, fostering reflection, and enhancing clinical practice. The lack of consistent and practical guidance during the debriefing process after simulation exercises has been identified as a critical challenge in the nursing program. Without proper guidance, the debriefing process may not achieve its intended outcomes, underscoring the necessity of this project. The intervention at the heart of this project is the provision of a debriefing algorithm to nursing instructors. This algorithm will serve as a standardized guide, outlining the critical components of effective debriefing, such as establishing learning objectives, creating a safe and supportive environment, facilitating reflection, and providing constructive feedback. By implementing this debriefing algorithm, the project aims to make the post-simulation debriefing more symmetrical and beneficial for nursing students. The project will also utilize the Debriefing Assessment for Simulation in Healthcare (DASH) as an evaluation tool and conduct an anonymous survey after debriefing as a data collection method. The debriefing algorithm and the DASH tool are expected to enhance students' learning outcomes, promote reflection, improve clinical practice, enhance teamwork and communication skills, and boost confidence.
