Description

Adam warns Orlando of Oliver’s plot to kill him, and the two flee to the Arden together. The disguised Celia and Rosalind, along with Touchstone, arrive in Arden, where hey meet a shepherd, Corin, and his young friend Silvius, who suffers from unrequited love for Phebe, a shepherdess. “Ganymede” and “Aliena” decide to buy Corin’s master’s farm and sheep, and to remain in Arden.

Orlando and Adam arrive in the forest but Adam is near death from the journey. To save Adam, Orlando attempts to steal food from Duke Senior and his lords but the Duke welcomes Orlando to share their food. While Orlando fetches Adam, the lord Jaques offers his theory on the seven ages of a person’s life.

At court, Duke Frederick fears the beloved Orlando will conspire against him. Frederick seizes Oliver’s lands and insists he capture Orlando and return him to court. “Ganymede” and “Aliena” discover that Orlando is in Arden by finding his love poems to Rosalind hanging on the trees.

“Ganymede” confronts Orlando and offers to cure him of his love if he will pretend that Ganymede is Rosalind and woo her.

– INTERMISSION –

Touchstone befriends the forest folk and falls in love with Audrey, a goatherd. “Ganymede” overhears Phebe rejecting Silvius, so “he” berates Phebe for her unkindness toward the loyal young man. In spite of “Ganymede’s” harsh words for her, Phebe falls in love with “Ganymede,” not realizing that “he” is actually a woman.

Rosalind is heartbroken that Orlando has not shown up to woo “Ganymede” as he promised he would. Oliver finds “Ganymede” and “Aliena” in the forest and tells them how Orlando risked his own life to save him from a lion while he was sleeping. Oliver has reconciled with Orlando, who sent “Ganymede” a bloody bandage to show why he did not come to “woo” that day. Rosalind faints upon seeing the bandage. Oliver and “Aliena” assist her into the cottage and fall in love instantly.

“Ganymede” promises Orlando that tomorrow she will bring Rosalind to him to be married, and also promises Silvius and Phebe that each will have what they desire.
