Abstract

In December 2005 and January 2006, Charleston’s daily newspaper, the Post and Courier, featured stories describing a new water taxi service across the Cooper River connecting Charleston and Mount Pleasant.¹ The potential tourist development spurred by this new taxi excited the writer, but local residents knew that water transportation between the two cities was not new. In fact, as early as 1713 a ferry crossed the Cooper River connecting Charleston and Mount Pleasant, and this remained the primary mode of transportation over the river until the construction of the Grace Memorial Bridge in 1929.
