Abstract

Previous literature has determined that exposure to parental incarceration increases the chances of children having behavior problems. Using data from the Fragile Families and Childhood Wellbeing Study, the identification of parental incarceration and how it impacts fragile families will be explored. This study focuses on how parental incarceration affects an adolescent’s social, emotional, and behavioral development and how that leads to behavioral problems and delinquency. Further, the current study will examine if involvement in extracurricular activities moderates the relationship between parental incarceration and behavior problems. Identifying how exposure to parental incarceration affects adolescents could help identify new and additional ways to assist youth in developing new, positive life skills to decrease behavior problems and delinquency.
