Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine composite ratings at Arkansas School Band and Orchestra Association (ASBOA) sanctioned concert assessments from 2003 to 2019. ASBOA divides the state into nine geographic regions to group schools for ASBOA events. All schools in a single region who choose to participate in ASBOA activities perform at concert assessment together and compete against each other at all-region auditions. In 2011, a region realignment occurred to make the number of students participating in each region in various ASBOA activities, specifically all-region and all-state bands, more equal. As a result, ASBOA adjusted the geographic regions, and ensembles performed alongside different groups. The ASBOA website has all of the data publicly available for the years included in this study. This study specifically examined whether statistically significant differences existed among frequencies of composite ratings before and after the region realignment. Considering the amount of class time allocated to assessment preparation for many Arkansas ensembles, it is important to be aware of potential influences on ratings. Although I found a statistically significant difference in ratings before and after realignment (p < .001), it was not practically significant. However, an unintended consequence was discovering that classification possibly has a greater influence on ratings received than geographic location.
