Abstract
This art piece titled “The Weight of White Walls” is a sum of all the topics presented in my current medical humanities seminar. It centers around character India from Take My Hand by Dolen Perkins-Valdez, surrounded by white flowers burned to represent her innocence taken away from her through sterilization in the 1970’s. Encompassing India are pieces that focus on the importance of literature and understanding patients, combined with the continuously seen discrimination of women and certain races in both medicine and out of medicine. This includes elements from The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Hills Like White Elephants by Ernest Hemmingway, and more. This art piece resides on a canvas with primarily acrylic paint, but contains many 3D and scrapbook-like elements to create a sense of the piece “speaking out.”
