Abstract
This survey was designed to help determine potential facilitators and barriers to the implementation of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) from speech-language pathologists (SLPs) practicing in Arkansas. The questions within the survey consisted of short answers, rating scales, and yes or no questions. The categories of the survey included basic information, the SLPs’ practice, and the SLPs’ self-assessed confidence regarding AAC. The results indicated barriers included: less training at the undergraduate education, decreased use of AAC within therapy sessions, the cost of the device, intimidation to caregivers, and a lack of training for caregivers. However, a facilitator was that the SLPs were generally confident in recommending AAC devices. This study revealed a need to further explore the factors that lead to less frequent implementation of AAC within treatment plans.
